Athlete Tobi Amusan Has Reclaimed Her Position As Nigeria’s Top Athlete, Overtaking Ofili

TOBI

Currently holding the world record in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan is recognised as the leading athlete in both Nigeria and Africa. She has successfully returned to the top 100 in the World Athletics women’s overall rankings.

Reports indicate that after falling out of the elite group last year for the first time since the ranking system was established in 2019, where she initially debuted at No. 96, Amusan has made a remarkable comeback, now ranked 88th in the world with a score of 1366.

Her impressive return is fueled by a series of outstanding performances, including two runs of 12.45 seconds and a season-best of 12.24 seconds at the 2025 Paris Diamond League, where she finished second to Grace Stark. This time marks her fastest since she set the world record of 12.12 seconds in Oregon, USA, in 2022.

The dynamic young Nigerian athlete’s ascent has allowed her to regain the title of Nigeria’s highest-ranked female athlete, surpassing Favour Ofili, who held the position at the end of 2024 but has since fallen to 175th.

In the 100m hurdles category, Amusan has re-entered the top 10, currently sitting at No. 9, after finishing last year in 13th place.

With her performance peaking ahead of significant championships, Amusan seems poised to either match or exceed her remarkable 2022 season, during which she was acknowledged as the world’s top sprint hurdler and ranked fifth overall among women.
