The eagerly awaited National Swimming Championships, organised by the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), will begin today (June 24) at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

This two-day event will feature hundreds of students from both public and private schools nationwide competing for prestigious awards.

This year’s tournament is a joint initiative with Dynaspro Sports Promotion, known for its leading private inter-school swimming competitions, and the Nigeria Aquatic Federation. The goal of this initiative is to identify and cultivate young swimming talents who may represent Nigeria on the global stage.

Dr. Oba Funsho Usman, Secretary General of the NSSF, emphasised the increasing excitement among students, which prompted the inclusion of private schools in the competition. He mentioned that several exceptional swimmers from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State will also take part.

“We have witnessed outstanding performances from students at the previous National Sports Festival, where they secured medals for their respective states. To ensure we discover the best talents, we have broadened the tournament to encompass private schools,” Usman stated.

“With the technical proficiency of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation and the innovative contributions from Dynaspro, we anticipate record-setting performances and the rise of new swimming stars.”

All participating teams are expected to arrive on Monday, June 23.

Registration for all participants will take place early this morning as the competition commences in earnest, with the finals scheduled for tomorrow, June 25. Winners will be awarded medals and prizes, both individually and as part of their teams.
