Club World Cup: Messi Magic, Botafogo Beat PSG, Atletico Bounce Back

After a goalless draw in their opening Club World Cup match against Egyptian side Al Ahly, Inter Miami secured their first win by defeating FC Porto. Miami had gone behind after Samu Aghehowa converted an early penalty for the Portuguese side in the first half.

However, winger Telasco Segovia drew them level, reigniting their hopes before Lionel Messi delivered a sublime free kick less than 10 minutes into the second half. The match ended 2-1 in favour of Miami, who now sit on four points in the Club World Cup standings. They are set to face Palmeiras next.

With both teams having a win and a draw, a stalemate would be enough for both sides to progress to the knockout stage. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid bounced back from their 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in their opener by beating Seattle Sounders 3-1 at Lumen Field.

Diego Simeone’s side will now face Botafogo in another must-win clash to determine who advances to the next round. Botafogo pulled off a shock victory over Champions League holders PSG, winning 1-0 thanks to a late first-half goal by Igor Jesus.

The South American champions held firm through a tense second half to maintain their perfect record and go top of the group with two wins from two. PSG showed little of the fluid, dynamic play that had defined their recent form, but Luis Enrique’s side remains in a strong position to qualify as they prepare to face MLS side Seattle Sounders in their final group match.
