The Chairperson of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has announced that the 2025/26 season will commence on 22 August 2025 and run until 24 May 2026.
Elegbeleye made this known during a press briefing held on Friday, where the just-concluded season was reviewed and projections for the upcoming campaign outlined.
He stated that the decision to adhere to a fixed calendar reflects the league’s growing commitment to professionalism, strategic planning, and consistency.
According to him, a stable schedule will enable clubs, players, match officials, and scouts to better organise their activities around the NPFL calendar.

“This is the first time in many years—perhaps since the start of the new era of the Nigeria Premier Football League in 2005, twenty years ago—that a kick-off and closing date will be faithfully implemented. That is a commitment we made and a promise fulfilled,” he said.
Reflecting on the 2024/25 season, which kicked off on 31 August 2024 and ended on 25 May 2025, Elegbeleye highlighted the league’s successful adherence to its timeline and expressed confidence in the sustainability of the current structure.
Remo Stars emerged champions of the 2024/25 season, securing the title with three games to spare after defeating Niger Tornadoes on Matchday 35, played on 27 April. The campaign featured a total of 380 matches, yielding 286 wins and 94 draws.
Mr Elegbeleye described the season as a remarkable one, not only for its competitive edge but also for the notable statistical milestones achieved.
