Freedom After Eight Years Without Trial in Port Harcourt

After an astonishing 8 years and 4 months of detention without trial, John Gift Tobia, a Nigerian man, has finally been freed from the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre.

Tobia’s arrest in 2017 at Rumuokoro Junction in Port Harcourt led to a prolonged and unjust detention, with his case never proceeding to trial despite being remanded in prison by a magistrate court.

Tobia’s release was made possible through the tireless efforts of human rights lawyer Hope Azinuchi Azeru-Oziri, also known as Law in Pidgin. Azeru-Oziri took up Tobia’s case pro bono after visiting the prison in January 2025, demonstrating her commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring justice is served.

The lawyer’s efforts were further bolstered by donations from her social media followers and a Nigerian living in the UK, highlighting the power of community support in bringing about positive change.

The High Court of Rivers State played a crucial role in securing Tobia’s release, declaring his prolonged detention without trial “illegal and immoral” and ordering his immediate release on June 4, 2025

His emotional response serves as a poignant reminder of the human impact of indefinite detention and the importance of ensuring that individuals are not subjected to prolonged detention without trial.

Tobia’s case highlights concerns about indefinite detention and the need for timely trials, an issue that has sparked debates worldwide. Indefinite detention without trial is considered a violation of human rights, and cases like Tobia’s serve as a reminder of the need for continued efforts to protect human rights and ensure that individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

Tobia’s release is a testament to the impact of human rights advocacy and the importance of access to justice. The case demonstrates the crucial role that human rights lawyers, like Hope Azinuchi Azeru-Oziri, play in upholding human rights and ensuring that individuals are not subjected to prolonged detention without trial.

As Tobia begins to rebuild his life, his case serves as a powerful reminder of the need for continued efforts to protect human rights and promote justice.
