SWAN Applauds Gateway Games, Endorses Leadership, Charts Path For Future Sports Festivals

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), at the conclusion of its National Convention held during the 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2024, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, released a comprehensive communiqué applauding organisers, reaffirming leadership, and issuing strategic recommendations to enhance future editions.

The convention commended the Ogun State Government and its people for their outstanding hosting of the festival, lauding the provision of quality facilities across 37 events. Special praise was extended to the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, for the innovative introduction of Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) and other organisational reforms that raised the festival’s standard.

SWAN hailed the digitization of media accreditation, describing it as a milestone in improving communication and coverage logistics. On behalf of the Nigerian sports media, the Convention expressed profound appreciation to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his unwavering support for sports development in Ogun State.

Significantly, delegates congratulated SWAN President, Comrade Isaiah Benjamin, on the association’s recent legal triumph, describing the court victory as a win for institutional integrity. A motion of confidence in his leadership was unanimously adopted, with a call for unity and magnanimity going forward.

Recommended the establishment of dedicated press galleries and media centers in key venues.

Advised the NSC to decentralise talent development and build sustainable grassroots structures for sports mentorship.

Stressed the critical importance of athlete safety, particularly regarding transportation logistics between venues.

The Convention also commended Enugu State for its early preparations as the next host and urged organisers to learn from identified lapses. SWAN advised that the State Chairman be appointed as head of the Media Committee and be embedded in the planning core for efficient coordination.

The communiqué was signed by key officials of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, including Chimezie Anaso (Anambra), Samuel Ahmadu (FCT), Segun Giwa (Ondo), and Ikenna Okonkwo, SWAN Secretary General.
