Transfer Window Opens for Premier League Clubs

The Premier League (EPL) announced that the 2025 summer transfer window opened from 1 to 10 June, allowing Premier League and EFL clubs to conduct player transfers during this period. In a statement issued on Sunday, the EPL stated that the early opening was due to an exceptional registration period granted for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

The standard summer window will then open on 16 June and close on 1 September. Chelsea and Manchester City are the two Premier League clubs set to participate in the Club World Cup, which kicks off on 15 June, with the final scheduled for 13 July. Information available has it that FIFA approved a proposal in October 2024 granting teams involved in the Club World Cup an additional registration window from 1 to 10 June.

This provision enables them to register players in time for the tournament. An example of this arrangement was seen when Real Madrid signed Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of the tournament, even though his contract with Liverpool expires on 30 June. The early signing allowed Madrid to negotiate terms and ensure his availability for the competition.

The expanded Club World Cup will feature 32 teams and take place every four years. This year’s edition is being hosted in the United States. The tournament winner is set to receive up to £97 million ($125 million) in prize money from FIFA. Since the window opened, several clubs have confirmed player movements. Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has left Liverpool to join Brentford in an £18 million package deal, while Brentford’s Mark Flekken has transferred to Bayer Leverkusen for €10 million.

Meanwhile, Chelsea is in a discussion with Jadon Sancho’s representatives regarding personal terms, including salary details, although an agreement is yet to be reached. Final talks are expected to take place next week, which could determine the winger’s future. Should the negotiations fall through, Sancho is expected to return to Manchester United, with a £5 million compensation clause reportedly in place.
