Uncertainty has surrounded the future of Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo after he posted a cryptic message on X (formerly Twitter) following Al Nassr’s 3–2 defeat to Al-Fateh in their final Saudi Pro League match of the season, held at the Prince Abdullah bin Jalawi Stadium.
The Port City News reported that the 40-year-old wrote: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all,” a statement many fans interpreted as a possible farewell to the Saudi Pro League club.
Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in January 2023 on a contract set to run until June 2025, following his departure from Manchester United.
Amid the speculation that followed the former Real Madrid forward’s comments, Al Nassr’s sporting director, Fernando Hierro, stated on Thursday that the club is keen to extend Ronaldo’s contract.
Speaking at a press conference, Hierro confirmed that the club, which finished third this season, is already in discussions to renew the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s deal and ‘hopes he continues with us.’

He added that Ronaldo remains a highly sought-after player, with reports linking him to interest from around thirty different clubs.
Hierro further emphasised that Ronaldo’s arrival had been part of a national project from the outset. He described the Portuguese legend as a monumental figure in football history, crediting him with playing a key role in the growth of the Saudi Pro League.
“Ronaldo’s contract with Al Nassr runs until June 30. We will work to renew his contract so he can continue with us, and there are many clubs interested in signing him.
“We are negotiating with Cristiano Ronaldo to renew his contract. God willing, we will find a solution”, Hierro said.
However, journalist Fabrizio Romano stated on his social media platforms on Thursday that Ronaldo, who had already scored 800 club career goals, turned down a move to Al Hilal — a rival of Al Nassr.
Ronaldo will join Portugal’s national team next week ahead of the UEFA Nations League finals.
