The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is set to release the results of 379,000 candidates who sat for the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Wednesday.
This examination was rescheduled due to technical and human errors that occurred during the initial UTME, particularly in Lagos and the South-East states, affecting approximately 379,997 candidates.
The technical glitch affected over 206,610 candidates across 65 centers in Lagos and 173,387 candidates in 92 centers in south-East zone.
The errors led to a mass failure, with over 1.5 million candidates scoring below 200 marks out of a possible 400 in the initial UTME. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede publicly acknowledged the errors, visibly emotional, even shedding tears, as he described the situation as “sabotage” and announced a makeup exam for the affected candidates.

Performance in Initial UTME:
- Scored 320 and above: 4,756 candidates (0.24%)
- Scored between 300-319: 7,658 candidates (0.39%)
- Scored between 250-299: 73,441 candidates (3.76%)
- Scored between 200-249: 334,560 candidates (17.11%)
- Scored between 160-199: 983,187 candidates (50.29%)

The South-East caucus in the House of Representatives is demanding Prof. Oloyede’s immediate resignation, citing “catastrophic institutional failure” and calling for a completely new examination.
They criticized the short notice given for the rescheduled UTME and scheduling conflicts with ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examinations, which caused unnecessary trauma for students and their families.
