HURIWA Urges Restoration of Democracy in Rivers, Says Fubara’s Mood Not a Valid Excuse

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed deep concern over the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as an unconstitutional power grab.

Despite Fubara’s recent comments suggesting indifference to returning to office, HURIWA argues that this development should not legitimize the unlawful takeover of the state.

HURIWA emphasizes that the President lacks constitutional powers to suspend a duly elected governor and impose a sole administrator over a state.

The Association stresses that Nigeria’s democracy is anchored on the rule of law, the supremacy of the constitution, and the sanctity of electoral mandates.

HURIWA calls on Nigerians to defend democratic institutions and respect the constitution, regardless of personal opinions or affiliations.

The group urges the judiciary to remain vigilant and defend the constitutional order, declaring any unconstitutional suspension or appointment of sole administrators as null and void.

HURIWA warns that allowing this unconstitutional model to stand in Rivers State may set a precedent for other states, potentially turning Nigeria into a pseudo-military state governed by the whims of central authority.

The Association emphasizes that democracy dies not only by coups but also by the silence of those who ought to speak, calling on political actors to speak out against this development.

HURIWA urges the leadership of the National Assembly to defend democratic institutions and speak out against this unconstitutional power grab.

The group calls on the judiciary to remain vigilant and defend the constitutional order. HURIWA emphasizes that the Nigerian people must demand respect for democratic institutions and speak out against any attempts to erode the constitution.

  1. Nigeria was hardly practising democracy all the while, and the little civil rule we had has been totally eroded by the demonic sect called APC
