Heel Fissures: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment

heel fissures

Cracked heels medically known as heel fissures are a common foot problem which is usually associated with people who often walk long distances in slippers or barefoot, and spend extended hours standing for work especially in the northern part of Nigeria, with Rivers State not exempted. While some may see it as a minor cosmetic issue, untreated heel fissures can become painful and even lead to serious infections.  So, what causes those dry, cracked heels, and how can they be prevented or treated effectively?

What Causes Cracked Heels?

The skin around the heel is naturally thicker to support body weight. But without proper care, it can become dry and hard. However, when it becomes excessively dry, it loses flexibility and begins to crack. Several factors contribute to this condition:

  • Walking barefoot or wearing slippers frequently
  • Standing for long periods, especially on hard floors
  • Excess weight, which puts more pressure on the heels
  • Poor foot hygiene or harsh soaps that dry out the skin
  • Dry weather or frequent exposure to water
  • Certain health conditions, like diabetes or eczema, or fungal infections

Whether you’re a health worker, a trader, a fisherman or a civil servant, your feet work hard every day, especially your heels. Maintaining your health is not just a matter of comfort—it’s a key part of your overall well-being. Your feet carry you through daily life. Taking care of them, especially your heel,s is a simple but powerful way to stay comfortable, confident, and healthy.

While it may seem minor at first, untreated heel fissures can deepen and become painful. In severe cases, they may bleed or become infected, posing serious health risks, especially for individuals with diabetes or low immunity. Which is why it’s important not to ignore the signs.

How to Prevent Heel Fissures

The good news is that cracked heels are preventable. A few simple daily habits can go a long way in keeping your feet healthy:

Moisturise daily:

Apply a thick moisturiser such as petroleum jelly or shea butter after bathing and before bedtime. This helps soften the skin, preventing cracks and promoting healthier feet

Avoid walking barefoot:

Wear sandals or covered shoes that support the heel. This helps protect your heels from dryness and pressure.

Avoid harsh soaps:

They strip your skin of natural oils.

Keep your feet clean and gently exfoliate:

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and prevents buildup, which could lead to dryness and cracked heels, also it helps eliminate blisters and infection.

Stay hydrated:

Drinking enough water helps maintain skin elasticity

Simple, Effective Treatment

For mild to moderate cracks, home treatment is usually enough:

  • Soak your feet in warm water for 10–15 minutes to soften the skin.
  • Gently scrub with a pumice stone or foot file.
  • Apply a healing ointment or thick moisturiser
  • Then wear cotton socks overnight to lock in moisture.

If the cracks are deep, painful, or bleeding, it’s best to visit a healthcare provider or dermatologist. They may recommend medicated creams, bandages, or further care depending on the severity.

Heel fissures may be common, but they’re also highly preventable. With the right care, you can stay on your feet, pain-free and confident.

Don’t wait until the cracks hurt. Cracked heels can be easily managed and even prevented. After all, healthy feet are the foundation of a strong daily hustle.
