The Rivers State Police Command has condemned the alleged assault on journalists by some of its officers during a recent protest in Port Harcourt, describing the incident as unfortunate and unprofessional.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command expressed deep concern over the complaints raised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), a strategic partner of the Police, following the alleged manhandling of its members by security personnel deployed to monitor the protest.
“The Command unequivocally condemns this unfortunate incident and has commenced a full and thorough investigation into the matter. Preliminary findings have led to identification of some personnel who are currently undergoing questioning as part of the ongoing inquiry.”
While noting that officers were deployed to the protest scene to provide adequate security for citizens, residents, and members of the press, the police maintained that their presence was key to preventing criminal elements from hijacking the protest.

The Police Command reiterated its high regard for journalists, acknowledging their critical role in promoting peace, security, and development through objective reporting and public enlightenment.
“We value the longstanding relationship and collaborative efforts shared with the NUJ and regret any actions that may have strained this bond,” SP Iringe-Koko stated, adding that the issue would be handled with utmost seriousness and transparency.
She assured the NUJ, its members, and the public that the investigation would not be swept under the carpet, and that the outcome—along with any disciplinary measures—would be made public.
Reaffirming the Command’s dedication to professionalism and respect for human rights, the spokesperson distanced the police from any overzealous behavior and promised continued efforts to ensure law and order in Rivers State.
The police also appreciated the NUJ and the public for their understanding and support as investigations continue.
