The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Rivers State Branch, has joined the global community in celebrating the International Day of Women Judges.
They recognized the contributions of female judges to the nation’s judiciary, while advocating for greater inclusion of women in decision-making positions.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairperson of FIDA Rivers, Tamunoibuemi Life-George, emphasized the remarkable presence of women in the Rivers State judiciary, where female judges constitute 50% of the bench.
According to her, their rulings and judgments reflect true justice and fairness, reinforcing the credibility of the judicial system.
“We are very proud of our female judges. Whenever we hear their rulings, we recognize the justice and equity they uphold. We celebrate them and remain committed to promoting women’s representation in the judiciary.”
Despite increasing female participation in public service, FIDA Rivers noted that women remain underrepresented in leadership roles within the judiciary, particularly at senior levels.

The association reiterated the United Nations’ stance that the presence of women judges enhances the legitimacy of courts, making them more accessible to those seeking justice.
As part of the celebration, FIDA Rivers is championing the campaign “Women in Justice, Women for Justice”, aimed at promoting the full and equal participation of women at all levels of the judiciary. While acknowledging progress, the organization also called for continuous efforts to break barriers hindering women from attaining leadership positions in the legal profession.
FIDA Rivers urged stakeholders to support gender inclusivity in the judiciary, ensuring that more women have the opportunity to shape legal and policy frameworks that impact society.
