By Tina Amanda

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State Chapter, has joined the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day 2025, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts toward gender equality and women’s empowerment.

In a statement jointly signed by Susan Serekara-Nwikhana, Chairperson of NAWOJ Rivers State and the Secretary- Precious Ahiakwo-Ovie, explained the significance of this year’s theme: “Empowering Women, Transforming Societies: Breaking Barriers for a Gender-Equal Future.”

She noted that women have made remarkable strides in politics, education, healthcare, business, and the media, despite persistent societal and systemic challenges.

“As women journalists, we are uniquely positioned to amplify the voices of women, advocate for their rights, and hold institutions accountable for gender-responsive policies.”

Serekara-Nwikhana commended the resilience of women in Rivers State and Nigeria who continue to defy odds and excel in their fields.

While celebrating progress, NAWOJ Rivers acknowledged the ongoing challenges facing women, including gender-based violence, limited access to education and healthcare, and underrepresentation in leadership positions.

The association called on governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector to prioritize: Investments in women’s education and economic empowerment. Equal access to quality healthcare, policies that promote gender parity in all sectors.

NAWOJ Rivers also urged the media to take a more active role in shaping positive narratives about women, moving beyond sensationalism and stereotypes.

“We must tell stories that inspire, educate, and drive positive change,” the statement emphasized.

On this occasion, NAWOJ Rivers honours women of the State including mothers, sisters, daughters, and colleagues who continue to inspire through their strength and determination.

The association also recognized men who champion gender equality, calling for collective efforts to break barriers and challenge biases.

“Let us all recommit to creating a world where every woman and girl can thrive and reach her full potential,.”
