Rivers State – February 28, 2025 – A significant partnership aimed at bolstering healthcare and addressing environmental challenges has been forged between the Government of Belgium and Rivers State.
Following a high-level meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt, Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Leenknegt, announced Belgium’s commitment to collaborating with Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration.
The discussions, which focused on areas of mutual interest, revealed a strong intent to leverage Belgian expertise and technology for the benefit of Rivers State.
“This introductory meeting has laid the groundwork for a productive partnership,” Ambassador Leenknegt stated. “We have explored opportunities to introduce advanced healthcare solutions, through the Belgian business and chamber of commerce, to the hospitals in Port Harcourt and across Nigeria.”

Furthermore, the meeting addressed the critical issue of environmental remediation in Ogoniland, with both parties expressing a keen interest in exploring Belgian technological solutions for effective cleanup.
“Our dialogue extended to broader governance issues, providing a valuable exchange of ideas,” Mr. Leenknegt added. “This initial encounter with Governor Fubara has been insightful, offering a clear understanding of his administration’s priorities.”
This collaborative effort signifies a pivotal step towards enhancing the well-being of Rivers State residents through improved healthcare infrastructure and sustainable environmental practices.
