IBB should be jailed for annulling June 12 election – CSO

BY Mark Lenu

The Civil Society Organisation in Rivers State has recommended a jail term for former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd) for nullifying the June 12 election which would have produced MKO Abiola as president.

Babangida who is fondly called IBB admitted during his autobiographic book launch that Abiola won the 1993 presidential election, adding that the toughest decision ever made in his life was to nullify the result of the election.

Since Thursday that the revelation was made in Abuja, a lot of groups and individuals have been reacting including the Rivers State Civil Society Organisation whose Chairman, Ene-faa Georgewill had urged the appropriate authorities to jail IBB for committing treason against the Nigerian state.

In a chat with our correspondent, Georgewill said the crises bedevilling the country right from the 80s till date were mainly caused by IBB.

He said: “The entire book launch has exposed the facts that the current crises in Nigeria right from the 80s till date especially the crisis of underdevelopment got birthed by General Ibrahim Babangida (retd) and his friends in business.

“I said this because several revelations were made at the book launch on how the Niger Delta resources were shared among his cronies and friends.

“The annulling of the June 12 presidential election by Babangida is a treasonable felony against the Nigerian state and the appropriate punishment is for him to serve his term in prison and not to celebrate him.

“No matter the apologies and blame shifting on late General Sani Abacha, it will not solve the problem. The solution is for the appropriate authorities to invite Babangida for questioning and prosecute him for treason.”
