Rivers Angels Kick Off NWFL Season with a Thrilling Victory Over Ibom Angels

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Jewels of Rivers roared into the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) season with a thrilling 2-1 victory over their South-South rivals, Ibom Angels, at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. 

Head Coach Tosan Blankson made a bold statement by introducing five new faces to the starting lineup, showcasing his confidence in the team’s depth and potential. The first half saw a closely contested battle with both teams evenly matched, creating a tense atmosphere for the home crowd.

However, the second half saw the Rivers Angels step up their game. The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when Ifeoma Ikenokwalu found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. This goal proved to be the turning point, giving the Rivers Angels the momentum they needed to secure the win.

The victory not only marked a successful start to the season but also sent a clear message to the rest of the league. The Rivers Angels, with their talented squad and a determined coaching staff, are poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the NWFL this year. 

Coach Blankson’s decision to field five new players in the starting lineup paid off, highlighting the team’s depth and the coach’s willingness to give young talent a chance. Ifeoma Ikenokwalu’s 78th-minute goal proved to be the game-changer, showcasing her individual brilliance and contributing to the team’s victory.
