WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria has transformed healthcare delivery in Rivers State by installing solar power systems at two primary healthcare centers in Onne and Ogu communities.
The installations at the Model Primary Healthcare Centre in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area, and the Model Primary Healthcare Centre in Ogu, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, now provide reliable electricity, benefiting over 25,000 households and addressing frequent power outages.
During the commissioning ceremony, APM Terminals Nigeria’s CEO, Frederik Klinke, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). He stressed that WACT-APM Terminals goes beyond managing container terminals by investing in community development. Klinke explained that the solar power initiative aligns with the company’s global focus on improving health and education.
Klinke highlighted the project’s impact on community empowerment, particularly for women. “By improving health standards, especially for women, we strengthen communities economically. This solar project is a pilot, and we aim to scale it up for even greater societal benefits,” he said.
Jeethu Jose, Managing Director of WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria, also emphasized the importance of reliable power for healthcare centres. He explained that primary healthcare plays a critical role in every community and ensuring these centres operate efficiently reduces the burden on larger hospitals. Jose added that WACT-APM Terminals remains committed to fostering growth and progress in its host communities.

The company based its decision to implement solar power systems on a detailed needs assessment in Onne and Ogu. The assessment identified electricity as the most urgent challenge facing the healthcare centres. WACT-APM Terminals’ Community Relations Manager, Justin Okwuofu, confirmed that the solar installations directly address this issue, enabling the facilities to operate seamlessly.
The project has drawn widespread praise from local leaders and government representatives. Dr. Okachi Chukwuma of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board commended the company for supporting the state’s vision to improve primary healthcare. He described the initiative as a vital step toward sustainable healthcare delivery.
Barr. Christians Tamunobereton-ari, Vice-Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, also applauded the effort. He noted that the solar power systems will enhance the productivity of healthcare workers, enabling them to provide better services to the community.
Through this initiative, WACT-APM Terminals reinforces its commitment to improving health, education, and sustainable development, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of its host communities.
