16 Days of Activism: Rivers NHRC Intensifies Effort In Fight Against GBV

The Rivers State chapter of the National Human Rights Commission NHRC, has called for an intensified effort in the fight against sexual and all forms of violence against women and girls.

 

As the world commemorates this year’s 16 days of activism on Gender-Based Violence GBV, the NHRC State Coordinator, Mrs. Chinwe Okoroji, explained that the 2024 commemoration of the annual event tagged, “Unite! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls” is aimed at creating awareness on issues around violence against women and girls, with a view to stamp out the prevalence.

Okoroji noted that the programme which is slated to run from November 25 to December 10, is expected to inspire women and girls who are victims of any form of violence to speak out, as well as urged relevant stakeholders to unite in the fight to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

 

She said, “the International Community marks the 16 days of activism annually on the elimination of violence against women and girls between the 25th of November and 10th of December where awareness is raised on issues around violence against women and girls with a view to calling for actions to stamp out the prevalence of the same.”

 

The state NHRC coordinator stated that the commission would hold a road walk on December 10, to mark the International Human Rights Day IHRD.

 

She added that, “thereafter with other relevant bodies and CSO’s explore the topics; “(to eradicate) child labour or (to regulate) child labour and the legal provisions of the rights of women and girls, holding of perpetrators accountable and plan of action for advocacy for passage of laws on protection of women and girls from harmful practices peculiar to the state.”
