Davido Under Fire for Advising Black Americans Against Relocating to Nigeria

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked controversy following remarks he made advising Black Americans, particularly those of Nigerian descent, against relocating to Nigeria.

Speaking on The Big Homies House podcast, the singer expressed concerns over Nigeria’s current economic challenges, stating, “It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles.”

The comments came amid speculation that some Black Americans were contemplating leaving the United States after the election of Donald Trump as President. Reports suggest that African Americans and Africans in the U.S. are worried about potential policies under Trump that could adversely affect them.

Davido’s statement has triggered significant criticism, with many Nigerians urging him to retract his remarks. Among the critics is Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who expressed his disappointment in a Facebook post.

“My in-law Davido has made me sad by telling the world in America that Nigeria’s economy is in shambles. This is very sad. I will advise him to retract the statement asap. Nigeria made Davido. QED!!!” Igbokwe wrote.

Similarly, Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, labeled the remarks as unpatriotic. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ahmad stated:

“Selling out your country from foreign soil is so disappointing and unpatriotic. Public figures like Davido should know that. They should act and be seen as good ambassadors for Nigeria wherever they find themselves.”

The incident has reignited conversations about the responsibilities of public figures in representing their home countries, particularly in international forums. While some supporters argue that Davido was being honest about Nigeria’s economic realities, others believe his comments could harm the country’s image.
