The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has extolled the contributions of the National Youth Service Corps NYSC Scheme in nation-building, mostly in the education sector.

The governor stated this when he received the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Moses Oleghe at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday.

Governor Fubara used the occasion to express his delight and gratitude to the Scheme for “bridging the gap in skilled manpower by the deployment of corps members who have over the years filled those gaps with competence, expertise, and professionalism.”

He recalled a time in Opobo, his hometown when there was a shortage of teachers, noting that corps members were on the ground to fill the void, which the community remains ever grateful.

Speaking further, the governor said the Scheme was a reliable partner with government ameliorating the disturbing situation of unemployment amongst graduate youths through the Scheme’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme.

He commended the NYSC top management for its recent policy to help the government achieve food security through the engagement of corps members in the agricultural and food production value chain.

Assuring the state NYSC of his administration’s support to their goal, the governor noted that he had listened attentively to their requests and that the government would look critically into them and come out with what would be best for the State and the Scheme.

Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator had thanked the governor for creating a peaceful environment for corps members to thrive.

He informed him that the NYSC top Management in Abuja rates Rivers State highly as a one of the States where ” NYSC is at home a rating that prompted the approval of the location of NYSC South South Area Office II overseeing the affairs of the Scheme in Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States in Port Harcourt.”

He noted that the approval of the location of the SSAO II in Rivers State was borne out of top management appreciation of the lofty support to the Scheme over the years by Rivers State government.

He thanked the governor for the payment of monthly state allowance to all corps members in the State and pleaded that it to be paid more regularly while also thanking him for the numerous support the scheme has continued to enjoy in the state.

Mr. Oleghe appealed to the governor to approve office for the SSAO II, release utility vehicle for the Director as well as provide official accomodation for him.

Equally, he appealed for the relocation of the NYSC State secretariat to a better place owing to the fact that the current office is highly dilapidated with structural defects, the release of a befitting utility vehicle for the State Coordinator as well as official residence.
