Portland Gas Limited has received a significant boost in its clean energy initiative as the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority granted it a free zone enterprise licence to establish a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion and refilling centre in the Onne Free Trade Zone, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The project, described as a game-changer for Nigeria’s energy sector, is part of efforts to drive nationwide CNG adoption in line with President Bola Tinubu’s policy push for cleaner energy alternatives.

Speaking on the development, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Portland Gas Limited, Folajimi Mohammed, underscored the environmental and economic benefits of the initiative. “This project is not just about setting up a facility; it’s about securing a cleaner and healthier future for Nigeria. We are proud to contribute to this national priority and look forward to the official inauguration,” Mohammed said.

The CNG center, strategically located in the Onne Free Trade Zone—a hub for industrial activities—is poised to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on petrol and diesel while promoting environmentally friendly energy sources. Mohammed added that the facility would generate numerous jobs, attract investments, and expand Portland Gas Limited’s infrastructure, which already has a strong presence in Abuja and Lagos.

Bamanga Jada, Managing Director/CEO of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority, hailed the move as a transformative step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and aligning with global energy trends. “The shift of our Oil and Gas Zone into a CNG-compliant region not only aligns with global energy trends but also propels us toward a sustainable and economically vibrant future,” Jada noted.

The Onne CNG center represents a significant stride toward achieving a sustainable energy landscape in Nigeria, reinforcing the government’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable development. The initiative is expected to pave the way for further innovations and investments in green energy solutions.
