Reports revealed that the man who was kidnapped deals on scrap metals in building material market while the Okere who was shot dead was a generator mechanic who hails from Ofeh Community in Omuma LGA of the state.
Wife of the deceased, Mrs. Peace Ulakwu Samuel, narrated how she found the corpse of her husband, Mr. Samuel Okere, in a farm land in their estate, on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
Lamenting that she cannot cater for their four children, the widow called on the state police command to investigate and apprehend the killers of her husband.
Speaking in a telephone Interview, the woman explained that her late husband “came back and I told him to bump water, that was around past seven, it was getting dark small. After bumping water he off gen, without wearing cloth he told me that let him just stroll round, I said come and eat, he said that I know that he doesn’t like eating without bathing.
“He called one of the kids to go and put water in the bathroom for him that he is coming. So it’s not upto five minutes, I heard a gunshot, I said ah ah, what happened? Not even in that our street, the next street.
“I heard another one, I told my children let’s enter inside maybe your daddy is hiding wherever he is, because of the gunshots lets enter inside he will come back. So I started calling his line. At that initial time it was ringing, it rang nobody picked, more than six, seven times, his phone was ringing without picking. My own thought was that maybe he don’t want to pick as he is hiding so that nobody will know where he is.
“When everything stopped, later I heard that they kidnapped one of our neighbour there. So when those people whether kidnappers left, everybody started coming out, all the landlords started coming out. I came out again I did not see my husband, I said ah ah, because I know the kind man I married. I said is it my husband that will hear this kind of gun after everything when others started coming out he will not come out.”
Peace noted that she complained to the landlords in their neighborhood that her husband had not returned home but they consoled and assured her that he would return.
She added that when, “the woman that they kidnapped her husband was crying seriously that they have kidnapped her husband, the only thing I answered the woman; your own is even better that you are aware that they kidnapped your husband what of me that I have not even seen my husband. After everything I stayed, waiting for him with the kids, I stayed till past 12, some landlords na called me said I should enter inside that he will come back in the morning. I said ah ah, come back in the morning what happened this night?
“So when I entered, it’s not upto one hour, as I entered around that past 12, I heard our neighbour’s dogs barking seriously, two of them, they were barking seriously. Another thing I thought was whether he is coming back, secondly I said who know whether this man is still alive, whether they want to bring his corpse in his house and run away; that was the two things that came into my mind.
“I removed fear, peeped through window whether I will see him infront of the house but I did not see him, I went back into the room. Around past five I called my sister that is staying with me that I am not comfortable that your daddy has not come back, let’s go and look for him. So we started near our house looked round we did not see, the next plot of land there, close to us, we entered it and saw the corpse.”
The widow affirmed that the matter had been reported to the Police.
According to her, “policemen from Igwuruta came and noticed that our side is under Etche division, they said it’s not in their hand that it’s Etche that knows what to do. So I don’t know whether the Police from Etche came.”
While appealing for immediate Investigation into her husband’s killing and apprehension of his killers, Peace added that, “the kids are still small, four kids and only me cannot train them.”
Though the state police command was yet to react to the incident but we gathered that the matter has been reported to Umuebule Police Division incharge of the area in Igbo-Etche and the corpse has also been taken to an undisclosed mortuary in his place.
