President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for immediate action to restore peace and order in Rivers State following alarming reports of arson and explosions linked to last Saturday’s local government council elections. In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed profound concern over the escalating violence and urged political leaders to take steps to de-escalate the situation.

The directive comes in the wake of heightened tensions as various political factions have engaged in violent confrontations in the state. Tinubu emphasized the critical role of law enforcement agencies, instructing them to swiftly bring the situation under control and ensure the security of public institutions.

“Government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism,” President Tinubu stated, reinforcing that acts of self-help have no place in a democratic society, especially after 25 years of uninterrupted democracy.

It bears mentioning that the President further called upon Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and other political leaders to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law. He urged them to influence their supporters to refrain from any further violence. “The judiciary can settle all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception,” he reiterated, highlighting the importance of legal avenues over chaos.

As the situation in Rivers State remains tense, the President’s message aims to promote peace and stability in a region deeply affected by political discord. The call for restraint comes at a crucial time as the state navigates the complexities of political rivalry, urging all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and lawful conduct over aggression.

In light of these developments, it remains to be seen what the response of local authorities and political leaders will be, as those close to the matter insist it’ll be pivotal in ensuring that Rivers State remains a bastion of democracy and peaceful coexistence. The President’s stance on the matter reflects a commitment to maintaining the rule of law and safeguarding the democratic process in Nigeria.
