19 Traffickers Sentence to 302-Year in Imprisonment

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the conviction and sentencing of nineteen drug dealers to 302 years of imprisonment.

Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy, shared this information in a document via the NDLEA social media platform on Friday.

Babafemi noted that nineteen drug traffickers, which included three drug lords and sixteen offenders, were arrested on the ground of trafficking illicit drugs such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis, and opioids.

The document revealed that between July 1st and 31st, 2024, the nineteen convicted drug dealers were among the 414 drug traffickers and dealers convicted by the Federal High Court in Benue, Bauchi, Edo, Lagos, Ogun, Gombe, and Abuja.

A 50-year-old Bolanle Dauda listed among the drug lords was to have been arrested along the Lagos-Badagry motorway by the operatives of an anti-narcotics agency while attempting to deliver consignments across the border into Ghana.

Meanwhile, 42 blocks of cocaine weighing 47.5 kg were found on him, and eight blocks of the same drug weighing 10 kg were recovered at his residence located at Plot 24/25 OPIC extension, Petedo Road, Agbara, Ogun State, bringing the total to 57.5 kg.

On July 19, Hon. Justice Ambrose Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Lagos State, with charge number FHC/L/537C/2024, sentenced Dauda to 21 years imprisonment with an option to pay a N30 million fine.

According to the document, it was noted that no fewer than 1,100 ampoules of lethal synthetic opioid, fentanyl, weighing 6.480 kg were recovered from another kingpin, Ikeh Ifeanyi, 34-year of age when arrested at the popular Idumota market in Lagos Island.

On July 4, Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court Lagos, in charge number FHC/L/433C/2024, convicted and sentenced Ifeanyi to 14 years in jail or provided a fine of N2 million.

Also, on November 16, 2022, Christian Anyanwu was found with 1.4 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed inside custard tins packed among cosmetics and foodstuffs going to Brazil via Doha on a Qatar Airways flight.

Furthermore, on July 12, 2024, Justice Yellin Bogoro of the Federal High Court Lagos sentenced Anyanwu to 16 years in jail, four of which were mandatory imprisonments without the option of a fine.

However, other offenders with several prison sentences include Moses Yakubu, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison on July 22 by Justice Rita Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court Abuja, and Oluosun Okikiola, who was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in jail on July 17 by Justice A. A. Okeke of the Federal High Court Abeokuta in Ogun State.

Moreso, on July 9 in Benue State, Justice R.J. Abubakar of the Federal High Court, Makurdi, convicted and sentenced Chanchan Terpase to seven years in prison, while on July 3, 2024, Justice C.O. Obiozor of the Federal High Court, Benin, in Edo State, convicted and sentenced Beauty Gani to 30 years in prison or pay the sum of N8 million fine.

Brig Gen Mohamed Marwa, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, acknowledged and commended the officers, as he noted that the conviction will further give bite to the drug supply reduction efforts of the Agency.
