Rivers NLC Expresses Confidence in Gov Fubara’s Commitment to N70,000 Minimum Wage

The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed optimism that the state government will seamlessly implement the new N70,000 minimum wage for civil servants. In an exclusive interview, NLC State Chairman Alex Agwanwor stated that the union is working collaboratively with the current administration, unlike its experience with the previous government in order to benefit both workers and the serving administration

Agwanwor commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his commitment to workers’ welfare, highlighting his promise on Worker’s Day, 2024, to implement the minimum wage agreed upon by the Federal Government. He noted that there have been no misunderstandings between the union and the government, attributing this to the governor’s proactive approach to addressing workers’ concerns.

It bears mentioning however that the Rivers State Government had denied reports last month that Governor Fubara proposed to pay a minimum wage of ₦80,000 to workers in the state and local government areas. A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, described the report as false and misleading.

Nonetheless, the NLC chairman expressed confidence that Rivers State will implement the minimum wage without any issues, citing the state’s ability to pay. He praised Governor Fubara for his efforts in improving workers’ conditions and welfare, stating that the union has no doubt about the government’s commitment to paying the new minimum wage.

It bears mentioning that President Bola Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Act into law on July 29, 2024, increasing the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000. With the NLC’s confidence in Governor Fubara’s administration, those close to the matter believe Rivers State workers can expect a smooth implementation of the new minimum wage.
