Fire destroys property worth millions in Port Harcourt

By Tina Amanda

In the early hours of Friday, August 2024, a fire incident razed a building located at Okwele/Lumumba Street, Mile 2 Diobu, resulting in the destruction of property and goods worth millions of naira.

The cause of the inferno remains unknown, but there are speculations that it may have been triggered by a cooking gas leakage in one of the apartments. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.

In an interview with our correspondent, a resident named Ifeanyi we have described the chaotic scene. “We were awakened around 4:00 am by the shouts from the compound.

“By the time we mobilized to the building, the fire had already spread to over eight apartments, and there was little we could do to put it out.

“The occupants had to save their lives first by running out of the building. The fire was so intense that the occupants of the compound could only remove very little valuables. People who own shops in the building also suffered a great loss because they had closed for business as at the time of the incident.

“The Police and local vigilante group were on the ground to prevent hoodlums from stealing the little items some of the occupants managed to bring out from their houses”. he said.

Our Correspondent who visited the scene of the incident on Saturday reports that the building contains twelve big stores, and ten rooms, and the store owners deal in foodstuff, clothes, drinks, provisions, etc.
