Abuja Area Mama, a widely known crossdresser has been found dead along Katampe-Mabushi Motorway, Abuja, on Thursday.
The ugly incident has sent a shocking wave to nitizens on X, formerly known as Twitter, leaving nitezens with mixed feelings.
Some of the citizens demand that justice be served to the crossdresser, whose identity has yet to be verified.
An X user, @OKTimileyin, explained that, “Dear @PoliceNG Area Mama of Abuja has been killed, and I’m really curious! Yes! This is Nigeria; there is no legal protection for the queer body, but there should be justice for a Nigerian person murdered in cold blood, regardless of their identity.
Another user, @MartinsIfijeh, emphasised that the death of the crossdresser may be the result of an interview that the crossdresser was featured in, in which he condemned the alleged murder: “Taking laws into your hands because you don’t like another person’s sexual orientation is the worst form of inhumanity. I believe the murder of Abuja area mama’ is a result of this interview he did months ago.”
@ManJhune commented that the alleged murder of the crossdresser was not necessary as he reacted to the ugly incident, “Why are Nigerians these wicked? He was never a thief or a kidnapper. Why take his life? This guy is away from his business and has never harassed anyone. They bullied him and said a lot of bad stuff about him.” He called out the alleged perpetrators to feed on the crossdresser’s body: “Make una go chop his corpse. Una deserves to suffer for this side of the world.”
Jessica, an X user, said, What pains me the most is that Area Mama will never get justice because of the institutional queerphobia in Nigeria. When she was stabbed a couple of weeks ago, the police turned her away. I’m sure they’ll also look the other way now that she’s gone. Rest in power, iconic queen.”
while some averred that this should serve as a deterrent to other crossdressers.
A social media activist, Martins Ortse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan on his X handle, explained that the death of the crossdresser was a deterrent to other crossdressers. “This is a warning to all crossdressers in Nigeria as VeryDarkMan reacts to the death of popular Abuja crossdresser ‘Area Mama’,” he wrote.
Explaining further in a short clip video, he spoke about his assertion that “it is not a coincidence; I might sound very insensitive.”
