Nigerian Music Practitioner, Femi Esho Confirmed Dead

The Nigerian music community mourns the loss of Babafemi Esho, a prominent music promoter and collector, who passed away on Monday at the age of 77 after a brief illness. His daughter, Bunmi Esho, announced his death in a statement on Tuesday, highlighting his significant contributions to preserving Nigeria’s musical heritage.

Known affectionately as ‘Baba Esho’ or ‘Baba Musician,’ he was the Chairman of the Evergreen Musical Company and the Founder of the Evergreen Music Heritage Foundation.

“Baba Esho departed to greater glory on Monday, 17th June 2024, after a brief illness at the age of 77 years,” Bunmi Esho stated.

Bunmi Esho also noted that her father would be remembered as someone who dedicated himself to ensuring the “immortality” of Nigerian Highlife, Juju, Sakara, Apala, Afrobeat, and other indigenous African music genres. His efforts in preserving and promoting these genres have left an indelible mark on the Nigerian music industry.

The family has announced that burial arrangements will be made public in due course. Esho’s passing is a significant loss to the music community, where he served as a mentor and champion of Nigeria’s rich musical traditions.
