Former First Bank Chairman, Ajibola Afonja dies at 82

Prince Ajibola Afonja, the former chairman of First Bank of Nigeria, bid farewell to this world on the fateful night of May 19th at the University College Hospital in Ibadan. His departure marked the end of a remarkable journey that saw him leave indelible marks on both the banking sector and the political landscape of Nigeria. Before his passing, Prince Afonja held significant positions of influence and responsibility. He served with distinction as the Minister of Labour during the Ernest Shonekan interim government of 1993, bringing his expertise and vision to bear on national matters. Additionally, he was a member of the All Nigerian People’s Party (ANPP), contributing his wisdom and leadership to the political discourse of the nation.

However, it was perhaps in the realm of finance that Prince Afonja left his most enduring legacy. As the chairman of the Board of Directors of First Bank Plc Nigeria, he steered the institution with a steady hand, guiding it through periods of both prosperity and challenge. His tenure was marked by a commitment to excellence and a dedication to the principles of integrity and transparency.

Prince Afonja’s contributions extended beyond the boardroom, as he was also known for his philanthropic endeavors. His hometown of Oyo Community benefited greatly from his generosity, as he spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at uplifting the lives of its residents. Whether through job creation or infrastructure development, he sought to make a tangible difference in the lives of those around him.

Affectionately known as Daddy IDS, a nod to his manufacturing company, Integrated Dimensional Systems, Prince Afonja’s impact was felt far and wide. His legacy of compassion and open-heartedness touched countless lives, earning him the admiration and respect of all who knew him. Though he may no longer be with us, his memory will continue to inspire future generations to strive for excellence and to serve their communities with selflessness and dedication.
