Fubara vows to resist impeachment attempt

Amidst impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to resist any action against him that is not justified.

He spoke on Monday at the Government House gate shortly after inspecting the relics of the hallowed chambers of the State House of Assembly that was burnt by hoodlums on Sunday night.

The razing of the hallowed chambers of the assembly complex is rumored to be a move aimed at thwarting the planned impeachment of the governor.

The hallowed chambers are the constitutionally recognized venue for state legislative business.

But despite the razing of the hallowed chambers on Sunday night, the state lawmakers still went ahead with their impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara on Monday morning, using the assembly auditorium for their sitting.

However, addressing hundreds of his supporters in front of the Rivers State Government House gate, Governor Siminalayi Fubara declared that any attempt that is not justified would be resisted, adding that he would neither be the first nor the last to face an impeachment challenge.

Fubara said: “Whatever it is that wants to happen, let it happen. If Siminalayi Fubara is impeached, I’m not the first, and neither will I be the last.
But what is important is, any attempt that is not justified, will be resisted.”

The governor accused a security officer of shooting him when he went to the House of Assembly complex to see the level of damage caused by the explosion masterminded by the hoodlums.

“We have gone to the assembly to see for ourselves what has happened. On my way there, I was shot at directly by the O.C. Operations or DC or whatever they call him.

“But it doesn’t matter. Somebody will die one way or the other. Either you die inside your house or you die on the road by something,” he said.

The governor challenged the impeachment plotters to tell Rivers people the offense he committed to deserve impeachment, assuring Rivers people of his administration’s resolve to protect and offer them dividends of democracy.

“Let them come out and tell Rivers people that offense that I have committed. That is what I want. Come out and tell the people of Rivers State that the offense that Fubara committed that is warranting impeachment.

“But my happiness this morning is, that the people of Rivers State, represented by every one of you here, are with us. I can go home and sleep. Let me assure you people that we will continue to defend you people. We will protect you people, and you will enjoy the dividends of democracy,” he said.
