The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of a man identified as Ken in a hotel located at Khana Street, D-line Port Harcourt.
The deceased died on Sunday morning after he lodged in the hotel on Saturday night.
The Spokesperson for the Command, SP Grace Iringe Koko, responding to an inquiry from our Correspondent, said a Staff of the hotel came to make a report about the sudden death of a guest at the Olu-Obansanjo Police Division and the DPO with some other detectives went to the hotel, where photographs and preliminary Investigation was carried out.
According to the PPRO, Police have retrieved the man’s corpse and Investigation is ongoing.
Our Correspondent reports that it is yet unclear whether the deceased lodged into the hotel with a guest.
Meanwhile, a Human Rights Advocate of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, said information available to him reveals that the hotel does not have a functional CCTV camera and proper check-in procedure.
He noted that his Investigation had shown that many hotels and guest houses in Rivers State do not adhere to check-in procedures as stipulated by the Rivers State Government sometime in 2018/2019 when there was a serial killer and killings of women in hotels and guest houses.
Wiro urged the Police to look into the absence of hotel procedures strictly.
He, however, suggests that the Rivers State Government, through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, should set up a task force to monitor the level of compliance by hotels and guest houses regarding check-in procedures.
He emphasized the absence of check-in procedures in hotels and guest houses makes it difficult for the Police and other relevant security agencies to carry out proper Investigation when a crime occurs in such places.
