Following the declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the just concluded presidential election by INEC, the Civil Society Organisation in Rivers State has asked the president-elect to address the issue of gas flaring.
The Chairman of the Civil Society Organisation in the state, Ene-faa Georgewill who listed what they would want the incoming president to do for the state and Niger Delta also told our correspondent that gas flaring is roasting the people of the oil-rich region.
“We will want the incoming president of this country to address gas flaring and stop it from roasting our people.
“Rather than allowing the gas to flare and keep killing our people, the incoming administration should convert it into cooking gas and electricity for the benefit of the masses.
“Another critical area, the next president should tackle is environmental degradation caused by bunkering and the activities of the oil and gas sector.
“Soot from these oil exploration and refining activities has damaged our health, air quality, water, and plants.
“In Tinubu’s administration as president, machinery should be set up to properly manage the oil and gas industry in a manner it will stop putting our health and environment in danger.
“The next president should also improve the state of our seaports and focus on Job creation,” he said.
Goergwill, however, took a swipe at INEC for conducting the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections in the state which were marred by irregularities.
