Brave Dickson

The Muslims in the south-south geopolitical zone of the country have condemned the shootings at the Ughelli Central Mosque in Delta State by some yet-to-be-identified gunmen, calling on security agents to immediately arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.

The gunmen were reported to have attacked the mosque on Friday at about 6.45 a.m., when worshippers were praying.

The shootings left several worshippers injured while some worshippers were said to have been taken hostage by the gunmen.

Expressing their anger over the incident, the Muslims who spoke through the Chairman of the Association of South-South Muslim Ummah of Nigeria, Alhaji Nasir Uwhor told our correspondent that on no account should the attack be swept under the carpet.

“This is not the first time that the Ughelli central mosque had been attacked by hoodlums as it was in that same mosque that our Financial Secretary, Mallam Musa Ugasa was shot and killed some months ago.

“We can not continue to remain silent while our places of worship are being attacked despite the security presence in the country.

“As a matter of urgency, we are calling on security agents to act fast and unmask the shooters before it will snowball into self-help which will be very dangerous,” Uwhor said.

The Muslim leader also called on Muslims in the area to keep calm and remain law-abiding, adding that the Muslim association under his watch will continue to prevail on security agents until the perpetrators of the shootings are brought to justice.
