Students arrested for romancing, kissing inside school premises

Tina Amanda

A female and male student of Community Secondary School, Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt, have been arrested by officers of Nkpolu Divisional Police Headquarters, for allegedly kissing and romancing inside the school premises.

The two S.S. 2 students were said to be involved in a hot romance in an isolated classroom inside the school, unaware that they were being videotaped by one of their classmates.

Our correspondent reported that the classmate who discreetly took the video of the romance sent the video to another classmate via (Whatsapp) who in turn drew the attention of other students to the incident.

It was gathered that the attention of the school management was drawn to the incident through a male teacher of the school, who stumbled on the video from a phone transfer made to his phone by one of the students.

It was further gathered that the school authority invited police officers from Nkpolu Divisional Police Headquarters on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, to arrest the culprits involved in the romance, including the male student who recorded the video and another male student to whom the video was transferred.

A parent of the arrested students, who pleaded anonymously, also confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

However, the principal of the school, Mrs. Patience Nwachukwu, is yet to respond to the text messages sent to her mobile phone by our correspondent.

In the meantime, Rivers State Police Command Spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, told our correspondent that she would get back, to us but has yet to do so as of press time.

Meanwhile, rights advocate Prince Wiro of the Center for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability said in his reaction said that the matter can be handled by the school management, through their internal disciplinary measures.

“I believe it is a matter that the school can handle ordinarily, but if the school’s administration, in its wisdom, decides to hand over to the police for precautionary measures, it is not out of place.”

“However, I would have expected the police to release all of the students after cautioning them rather than releasing some and failing to release others based on information at our disposal.”
