Senators seek to impeach Buhari over insecurity

Some lawmakers from opposition parties including some from the All Progressives Congress (APC) have called for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over the security challenges bedeviling the country.

It was learnt that the lawmakers had staged a walk-out of the plenary when Senate President Ahmad Lawan refused to accede to a motion moved by Minority Leader Aduda on the rising insecurity in the country.

Briefing newsmen at the National Assembly, Abuja on Wednesday, the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Phillip Aduda disclosed that the lawmakers have issued a six-week ultimatum to President to tackle insecurity.

According to them, should the president fail to tackle the challenges, they would commence impeachment proceedings against him.

He said, “We went into a closed-door session on the state of insecurity in Abuja and took cognisance that Nigeria is no longer safe

“Senate has recommended various measures and discovered that even Abuja is no longer safe.

“We agreed in the closed session that we will give President Muhammadu Buhari an ultimatum, but the Senate President Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan didn’t want us to raise the issue.

“However, we have issued six weeks for President Buhari to resolve insecurity or be impeached.

“We walked out of Chambers in protest.”
