The World Health Organisation (WHO) has officially declared the Monkeypox disease a global health emergency.
Recall that Monkeypox, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), is a rare viral zoonotic infectious disease, that is transferred from animals to humans.
WHO, in a statement on Saturday, said the disease has spread rapidly worldwide via new modes of transmission.
Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, in a press conference, noted that it activated its highest alert level for the growing Monkeypox outbreak, making the virus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
“We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little; For all of these reasons, I have decided that the global Monkeypox outbreak represents a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.”
Globally, data from WHO reports that no fewer than 16,000 cases of Monkeypox have been reported across over 70 countries in 2022 including Nigeria.
