Blasphemy: Rivers Muslims describe Deborah’s killing as murder, urge Tambuwal to compensate victim’s family

Brave Dickson

Muslims in Rivers State have joined a lot of people in condemning the killing of Deborah Yakubu by some Islamic extremists over the alleged blaspheming of Prophet Muhammad.

The Victim who was a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education was stoned and burnt to death by mobbers on the school’s campus.

Reacting to the incident, the Vice President-General and Leader of the Rivers State Islamic Council, Alhaji Nasir Uhor described the lynching of Deborah as murder, insisting that the killers of Deborah be brought to book.

Uhor said, “the killers of Deborah are not protecting the image of Prophet Muhammad as they claimed.

“Prophet Muhammad did not ask anybody to kill his blasphemers.

“When Prophet Muhammad was alive, he was insulted and assaulted several times, he did not kill, nor did he ask anyone to kill for him.

“In fact, during the last Hajj of Prophet Muhammad, he enjoined all Muslims to embrace peace and hate bloodshed.

“The killing of Deborah is murder and should not be swept under the carpet.

“Authorities should ensure they arrest, prosecute and punish the offenders in accordance with the full wrath of the law.”

The Islamic leader also urged the government of Sokoto State to compensate the victim’s family.
