The 7th Triennial Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Rivers State, could not hold as Nigerian Police Force shutdown the Union’s secretariat and chased journalist away following a directive.

Barely few minutes after the present NUJ executive were dissolved in order to commence fresh election that will bring in new leadership, disagreement ensured amongst members.

The Police Personnel on ground at the election venue citing the heated up arguments, dispatched all journalist and delegates for the 7th Triennial Conference from the NUJ premises.

The Officers said it is a directive meant to restore peace and sanity at the NUJ Secretariat.

In an interview with our correspondent, some journalists and delegates who expressed their feelings on the turn out of event, said the Police have no right to chase them out of the premises, as there was no crisis to warrant such.

They lamented that such actions by officers of the police is an embarrassment to the Union as they have no right to stop them from voting, noting that all constitutional requirements for the election was duly followed.

They called on the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, National Secretariat of NUJ to step into the matter, to enable them exercise their franchise by electing their choice candidate.
