Residents of a flood-prone community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State have been thrown into panic, following the appearance of flood in their community.
Our correspondent reports that some residents of Obieti community have started evacuating their properties to other places for fear that their community will soon submerge by the flood.
Speaking with our correspondent, the traditional head of Obieti Community, His Royal Highness, Allen Onita urged his subjects not to panic in order not to cause more harm to their wellbeing.
Eze Onita said, “my community dwellers became more worried when the meteorological agency told us that this year’s flood will be worst than 2012.
“Yes, we have started seeing the surfacing of the flood which we used to expect between August to November every year.
“And each time this yearly flood comes, we used to lose property in billions without compensation from anybody.
“Worst of all is the increase in malaria resulting from mosquito bites and cholera occasioned by contaminated drinking water each time the flood comes.
“I think my people have considered all these and have started panicking but they should please be calm.
“Even me speaking will soon evacuate some of my properties to a safer place as others have started doing but they should ensure that where they are moving their properties to is very safe.”
The traditional ruler also berated the government for doing nothing in addressing the perennial flood problem in ONELGA.
