UPTH CMD takes another jibe at Wike over covid-19 comments

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, Professor Ugboma has reiterated that the institution has trained many great medical doctors and health workers and it is still training at the moment.

This comes few days after the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said the hospital is unfit for medical services.

Speaking during the installation of a second Polymerase Chain Reaction PCR machine for testing of COVID 19 case in the state, Ugboma said that no doctor in the has not been trained by the hospital.

“There is no doctor in Rivers State that has not had experience from UPTH hospital. I can tell you that more than three quarter medical Personnel in the state were trained in UPTH either as students or as postgraduate.

“The present Commissioner for health of the state was a student of University of Port Harcourt, a lecturer in the institution before he was appointed as Commissioner. What we can do here in UPTH is what any medical expert can do elsewhere in the world, same management they offer in USA, United Kingdom, is what we offer here too”

“The two PCR machines are running now. Presently, COVID 19 test are ongoing in the laboratory. Only University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital had a befitting laboratory when NCDC visited and it was out rightly certified for COVID 19.

“The state owned laboratory is still under working process to see if it can be brought to an acceptable level of standard of NCDC.

“UPTH isolation Centre is the first of its kind in Rivers State and has the capacity to test, isolate and treat cases of Covid-19.

“The hospital will continue in its stride to maintain its status as one of the foremost health institutions and citadels of training and excellence in the country.

“It is my joy that residents of Rivers State and its environs can benefit from the privilege of having the center located in the hospital”
