Bill to establish Fed University of Environment in Ogoniland passes second reading at Senate

A bill for an Act to establish a Federal University of Environment Technology in Ogoniland, Rivers State on Wednesday passed second reading on the floor of the Senate.

The bill which was first sponsored during the 8th senate by former Senator representing Rivers South-East, Magnus Abe was re-sponsored by his successor, Barinada Mpigi.

Mpigi said if approved by the Senate, the university will be established in Saakpenwa, Tai Local Government Area of the state.

He said setting up the institution of higher learning in the area would provide the manpower needed to tackle the environmental degradation caused by years of oil exploration and exploitation, adding that the specialised university if established, would be the first in Africa.
