The public has been advised not to drink and drive in order to avert road crashes, all through the festive season.
Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps Rivers State Command, Corps David Mendie, who stated this shortly after an awareness on don’t drink and drive campaign in Port Harcourt, said it is better to drink water than intoxicating substance before or while driving.
According to him, several lives have been lost in road crashes due to alcoholic drinks taking by drivers, adding that vehicle operators should have enough rest before plying the road, as fatigue is also a contributing factor to road accidents.

“In this festive season and after the season drivers do not need to take things that will intoxicate them. It is not all about getting high, it also damages their body system as well and causes so many accidents on the road. Drinking and driving is very dangerous. If they must drink, it should be preferably water and not alcohol.
“Taking drugs while on the wheel is also risky because some drugs may cause drowsiness, chewing kola nut while driving as a way to prevent sleep is not good, kola nut is a depressant, it can cause fatigue. If you are fatigue, you park your vehicle and rest for a while before starting the journey again”
He, however, urged vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are in order before setting out on any journey, stressing that safety of life is Paramount.
