The Conscience of Ogoni People (COOP – formerly known as Ken Saro Wiwa Associates), has welcomed the newly deployed General Officer Commanding of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major-General F. O Agugo to Niger Delta.
Agugo replaces General Jamil Sarhem who was redeployed to Nigerian Defence Academy after 13 months.
COOP, an organization committed to the resolution of the decades of stalemate between the Ogoni people and the Federal Government of Nigeria over social, economic and environmental injustice, in a statement on Tuesday urged the new GOC to work with stakeholders and groups within the Niger Delta region in the arduous task of maintaining peace and security as well as ridding the region of criminal elements.
“Recently, the men of 6 Division, in collaboration with sister security agencies, successfully dislodged the criminal elements that held Ogoniland under siege for the greater part of 2019 and ensured that the sacked communities returned to their respective homes.

“As at today, the officers and men of 6 Division and other sister security outfits have restored normalcy to these flashpoints. This same feat has been replicated in other parts of Rivers as well as the other South-south States.
“You are a consummate and professional soldier as attested to by your track records, military training and qualifications. You rose through the ranks to the enviable rank of Major-General and until your posting to 6 Division, you were the Chief of Army Transformation and Innovation at the Army Headquarters, Abuja.
“We, therefore, have no doubt in our minds that you will bring your wealth of experience to bear on your primary duty of securing the lives and property of the Nigerian people resident in the States within your division.
“We trust your ability to perform your duties professionally, impartially and superlatively. We pray the Almighty God to guide you and endow you with the strength and wisdom to bring about the much-needed peace and security, not only in Rivers State but in the entire States under your Division.

“As you settle down into your new assignment, we deem it expedient to charge you to spare no effort in stemming the rising tide of violent crimes which has engulfed Ogoniland, Rivers State and the Niger Delta region at large in recent times, including the unusual intensity in cult clashes and counter-cult clashes which have created grave security concerns in the region.
“In the coming days, the leadership of COOP intends to engage with you with a view to securing your collaboration and partnership in our collective resolve to ensure the peace, order, security and well-being of the people of Ogoniland in particular, and the Niger Delta region in general”.
