NYCOP disowns Pyagbara, says tenure has long expired

The National Youth Council of Ogoni People NYCOP has cautioned the public against dealing with Legborsi Saro Pyagbara on any issue relating to Ogoni.

The group said Pyagbara is no longer the president of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) following the expiration of his tenure on December 31, 2018.

Reacting to a recent media publication in some newspapers in which Pyagbara spoke for MOSOP and Ogoni people in general, President of NYCOP, Theophilus Mbagha said Pyagbara was misrepresenting himself and criminally claiming the presidency of MOSOP given that his tenure as president expired constitutionally on December 31, 2018.

Mbagha said Pyagbara has become a nuisance and his activities need to be exposed to the general public.

“The constitution of MOSOP is very explicit on tenure and in Article 5 (3c) states as follows: Tenure: Members of either the central or Executive committee shall hold office for three years in the first instance but may be re-elected for another term”

He said Pyagbara served as president of MOSOP from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2015.

“In December 2015, he was re-elected for a second term which commenced from January 1, 2016, and elapsed on December 31, 2018.

“Pyagbara, therefore, has no basis to make any claims to the presidency of MOSOP and his continual desire to perpetuate himself in office is a smear on his person and an embarrassment to a movement that had committed itself to the cause of justice”.

Mbagha urged the general public especially the media not to compromise the integrity of the media houses by promoting Pyagbara.

Mbagha urged the media to check with the secretariat of MOSOP in Ogoniland for all information about the organization and not deal with fake people and impostors like Pyagbara who seek to run as president of MOSOP in perpetuity against the rules and constitution of the organization

The Ogoni youth president further said Pyagbara was not recognized by Ogoni youths and is likened unto a thief…

“In fact, he is as good as a thief in the eyes of Ogoni youths, making claims to what does not belong to him, and we urge the public to beware of Pyagbara and know that he has no business with the presidency of MOSOP at the moment”.
