The US military, in a statement, had confirmed a Global Hawk surveillance drone had been shot down late on Wednesday.
The unmanned aircraft designed to provide intelligence about huge areas of a territory fulfills the role of the famous Lockheed U2 spy plane that Washington used to gather data on its adversaries in the 20th century.
The Wednesday’s attack came amid heightened tensions in the region, following attacks on two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz which Washington and its allies have blamed on Iran.
However, Iran died being behind the attacks on the tankers.
