Rivers High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has awarded the sum of thirty million naira against the officers attached to the inspector General of Police Intelligent Response Team, Borokiri for the extra judicial killing of one Godday Alali .
Recall that the case of extra judicial killing of Godday Alali, the unlawful detention of his elder brother, Anthony Alali and the issue of falsified autopsy report from the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital on the deceased has been in court for a long time.
Godday Alali was arrested by the police officers on 2nd August, 2017 at his residence, the case was filed in court on 7th, September 2017 and he was killed on 8th September, 2017, while in detention.
While delivering judgment on the enforcement of fundamental human rights suit before him, presiding Judge, Justice Iheanyichukwu Wodi condemned the police officers for taking the life of the young man without any judicial process.
He said the police officers violated Sections of the constitution on extra judicial executions, adding that no investigation was carried out by the Police before killing Godday Alali.
The court thus awarded the sum of N30m to the family of the deceased as compensation to be paid by the police officers attached to Inspector General of Police intelligent response team, Borokiri area of Rivers state.
Speaking to journalist, Counsel to the Police, Essien Edet said he is not satisfied with the court Judgment adding that it will be appealed.
“We still have opportunity to put the record straight by correcting misrepresentations. We will take steps to correct the judgement passed because we believe that the court erred both in law and in facts. We will appeal it”
Also speaking, Vincent Macfrido , counsel to the deceased family thanked the court for allowing justice to prevail.
“We commend the court for enthroning justice. Today, the court has shown that court is not only for the high and mighty in the society, it’s equally for the living and the dead. This honourable court of Rivers state deserve an accolades. We are grateful that after all we have laboured, the court has proven that the police officers forged the autopsy report. We thank the court and God almighty”
Mrs Grace Anthony Alali, mother of the deceased told our correspondent, Tina Stephen, that she is happy that justice has been given to her late son who was taking away and killed by the police unjustly.
