An environmentalist, Andah Wai- Ogosu says indiscriminate dumping of plastics pose major ecological problems in the state.
Andah Wai- Ogosu in an interview, listed some of the environmental effect improper disposal of plastics can cause in the state.
“These plastics are found both on land and in the water surrounding most of the communities in the state and because they do not depreciate, they can block micro organisms that aid the fertilization of plants or block the hatching of fishes and this can cause major economic hindrance in food production.”
” Also, when plastics are burnt, it introduces very serious chemical agents that can affect any living organism if inhaled or digested”
The environmentalist advised residents in the state to always dispose their plastics properly.
“So many measures should be put in place to reduce the use of plastics in the state. These include methods from the economic point of view and from the environmental point of view.
” Firstly, plastics should be disposed accordingly. Just like in developed countries like the UK, they have different trash containers for recycling. There is one for bottles, plastics, papers and organic wastes.
” Also, introducing the use of paper bags which are easily degradable can also aid in controlling excessive use of plastics in the state and make disposal easier.
” Lastly, companies that manufacture plastics should take responsibility in the proper disposal of them. For example, some sort of incentives should be introduce to encourage people to recycle their used products”
