Earth Day: Victoria Nyeche expresses concern over indiscriminate dumping of plastics in Rivers State

The member representing Port Harcourt constituency I in the Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed concern over the manner in which plastics are being disposed and dumped indiscriminately in the state.

Victoria Nyeche who is a member of the house committee on environment, said the indiscriminate dumping of plastics in the state is affecting the ecosystem.

“22nd day of April 2018 is being celebrated as World Earth Day. Plastic pollution is affecting our oceans ,is affecting our health.

“We need to do all that we can to use biodegradable materials. Plastics take too long to discompose and at the end of the day, they affect the fertility of the soil.

“When you dump plastic into the ocean, they make our waters more difficult to navigate and they pose a danger to the fish, because fishes consume plastic. And when we consume this fishes, we are actually eating plastic.

“So even in our interest, we need to end plastic pollution.

Victoria Nyeche further advised residents of the state to take care of the environment and avoid engaging in acts that will pollute the water and environment.

“We need to protect our environment. We need to think of recycling. As a people, the environment is our life. When we protect the environment, we protect ourselves.

“I want to use this opportunity to call upon my constituents and my fellow Rivers people, let’s protect our environment, let’s protect our planet, let’s protect our earth.

“It is all that we have. When we protect our environment, we protect our lives” the lawmaker said.
