Ogoni born Environmental activist, Celestine Akpoobari, has warned groups agitating for resumption of oil exploration in Ogoni land, to stop further action until proper clean up is carried out in Ogoni area, as resuming oil exploration without a proper clean up, means dancing on the grave of Ken Saro Wiwa.
Celestine Akpoobari speaking at the sideline of an event, organized in honour of the National Coordinator of Ken Saro Wiwa Associates, Gani Topba, threatened to lead a protest against any firm that will come to Ogoni for oil exploration activities, without first ensuring the clean up of Ogoni Land.
“Any good Ogoni man will not think of resumption of oil exploration now, because it is oil that took us through this dirty track that we pass.
“Ken Saro Wiwa would have been alive if not for oil.
“So all the things that Ken Saro Wiwa fought for, what have we achieved. There are legitimate demands in the Ogoni bill of rights, have we achieved anyone?.
“So if we allow oil companies to come and resume oil operations now, then we will be dancing on the grave of Ken.
“I think we should first ask that the mess that the companies generated, should be cleaned up.
“We are even begging the government to clean up Ogoni. They’re yet to do the clean up and you want the companies to come back again? That’s an insult on the integrity of our struggle and on the person of Ken” he said!
